EXPERIENCE ON MSC TRAINING & IMPLEMENTATION
(Written by Nrusigh Pradhan - SCAMPIS Project Coordinator)
We participated in the training for conducting the Most Significant Change amongst the user farmers under the SCAMPIS programme in May. We enjoyed the training and learnt about this new technique and were looking forward to conducting it with the youth & the farmers. We had identified two blocks- Mohana & Raigad in Gajapati district & three blocks- Pottangi, Nandpur & Dasmanthpur in Koraput district for conducting the MSC.

After the training, villages in each of these blocks were identified and the trained SMO’s & BA’s started off with conducting farmer meetings in each village. Through these meetings the user farmers were identified. After we shared about the training & its purpose we found that many farmers came forward voluntarily for sharing their stories. Simultaneously upon talking to the local youth about the training & how it was a wonderful opportunity for them to engage in documenting life transforming stories & MSC, many youth also voluntarily came forward for the same. The trained SMO’s & BA’s narrowed down on five youth (aged 15-20 years) from each village for story collection.

This was followed by organising a one day farmers meeting & training for the youth in each of the selected villages. The youth were trained in different aspects, including, conducting interviews, making videos, doing still photography, story writing & also in observing things/ people & making notes. At the end of training, each youth was asked if they had understood their roles & responsibilities well & any doubts were clarified. In all 24 youth were trained and of these 18 were boys & 6 were girls. After recording the stories, all the participants (youth, staff of the Facilitating NGO & that of IDEI) met and conducted a discussion on their experience of conducting the stories, learning & observations etc on MSC in the SCAMPIS programme.

Some feedback from the participants: “I was very excited about the training & about conducting the interviews with the farmers. I learnt so many things under the training and was enthused about making videos, taking photos etc. When we were being trained I had started to think to myself how I will do it…what I will say etc. But when I actually went & interacted with the farmers I was very surprised to hear them talk so much about how much they liked the technologies & how much it has actually helped them. I am personally very inspired by the work and am sure will share it with anyone I think could benefit from this”: a youth participant. “This training helped me learn more about M&E. It helped me understand that impact more than just numbers. I would call these interactions heart to heart conversations in which farmers so openly shared about how their lives have been impacted. I was delighted to hear that with the increased incomes farmers feel a greater sense of respect & dignity. I also liked the idea of engaging local youth as they were able to talk to the farmers and understand and record everything without any loss of information due to language barriers. It was heartening to see the youth so excited- we found them ready much before time everyday and all set to interview farmers that day”: IDEI staff. It has been a good learning experience for us and a good opportunity for us to interact & engage with the local youth and there too with both boys & girls.
